Stockroom Cinema rated 5*

Last week, the Leeds International Film Festival came to Keighley. Our specially built Stockroom Cinema opened it’s doors on Wednesday 15th November 2023 for the first time for the screening of the documentary, From Where We Stand.

Keighley's Stockroom Cinema

This was followed by numerous films on Saturday 18th November, namely a showing of Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train, a documentary about an infamous New York City video store and the Yorkshire Short Film Competition.

The events were all a sell out and the audience enjoyed a very comfortable cinema experience complete with a licensed bar serving specially branded Virtuous ale from Kirkstall Brewery and retro tuck shop.

The film festival has now ended but the positive feedback about the space has already led to enquiries from people wanting to use the Stockroom Cinema for various other arts such as spoken word, comedy and theatre.

Brilliant workshops for Keighley kids

Keighley Creative’s I Am Brill project is focused on celebrating the people of the local community and their brilliant talents.

As we approaching the 100 year anniversary of the opening of the Mechanics Institute, local artists are keen to highlight the town’s successes, not just in history but today, and celebrate the potential that the children of Keighley have and to help them feel brill!

I am Brill workshops

I Am Brill workshops are being held across town to give the opportunity for lots of Keighley people to be creative, show off their talents and make fun stuff from recycled materials.

Anyone is welcome and the aim is to make brilliant things whilst talking about what makes our community brilliant.

These workshops are all in preparation for our big I AM BRILL disco on Friday 12th January 2024.

Let Brilliant Talents Shine Forth

You may have noticed something illuminating in Keighley today. A quote has appeared on the front of Keighley Library that is taken from a document from the original Mechanics Institute that was on North Street.

The idea of the Mechanics Institute was to educate Keighley folk, to let their brilliant talents shine forth, and bring positive change to town by increasing opportunities. An amazing and inspiring message.

The artwork has been designed by local artist Letty McHugh as part of the BDisLiT festival and Keighley’s winter celebrations.

The library was chosen as the location for this non-permanent art installation as it is a place for learning and because of its links to the Mechanics Institute.

We think it’s brill!

Thank you to local Dan Jerwood for the photo.
